Cartagena
de Indias, as no other city in the Caribbean, is
deeply connected to its history. More than 10 kilometers
of walls, 25 forts and the most impressive military
architecture ever constructed on American soil,
the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, attest to its
strategic and commercial importance, and confirm
its nobility. Founded in 1533, Cartagena de Indias
has been a city born to make history.
Cartagena was the
first city in proclaiming its independence in
Colombia. Names such as Francis Drake and the
not less legendary Admiral Vernon, institutions
such as the Inquisition and slavery, galleons
putting into port loaded down with gold have shaped
its unique nature and have left an indelible mark.
Given its valuable patrimony, carefully preserved,
in 1985 Cartagena de Indias was declared Historical,
Cultural and Artistic Heritage of Humanity by
the UNESCO.
The magic of past centuries can still be felt on its streets, mixed with the ever-present joy of its inhabitants. Legendary, heroic and desirable, Cartagena offers its visitors the possibility of bringing the past to the present. From each balcony, from each bastion, from each street the Pearl of the Caribbean has numerous hotels located along its coast and convents from the 17th and 18th centuries have been restored into modern and fancy hotels inside the Old City.
It has a nice climate and easy access: it is just 3 hours away from Miami and 7 from Madrid, and a flight from the main flower production regions, Bogotá and Medellín, takes just 50 and 30 minutes respectively.
These benefits, added to the history, monuments,
hospitality and warm people of Cartagena, make
it the perfect place for PROFLORA 2007.
Together we will re-discover its history.
